This drill uses 1/3 of the ice. The forward and Defenceman are racing for position, so it's a good short-run speed drill.
Coach must time the players so that the forward receives the pass as the defenceman is just getting into position, so some adjusting of distances between cones is necessary. An additional coach is also useful in letting players "out of the gate" at the right time.
